Stan Lee vs Marvel Comics

Stan Lee vs Marvel ComicsJames Brophy reports:

In an action equal in strangeness to Bill Gates suing Microsoft for anti-trust violations Stan Lee is suing Marvel Comics for breach of his contract. Having made himself the face of Marvel since the early 60’s, the company still pays lee the former editor in chief one million dollars a year just to use his name and image in the sale of their books.

Lee is seeking 10 million dollars in damages. The point of contention seems to be that Lee feels that marvel has reneged on a promise to 10% of the profits from movies and television shows based on his characters, as detailed in his work agreement. The company believes that the 1 million a year that they pay him for the use of his name and image, under the title of ‘Chairman Emeritus’, is sufficient compensation.

The lawsuit comes at a time where marvel is riding high not just in comics but also in film licensing. Many of marvel’s biggest projects are set for release next year, Daredevil, The Hulk, X-men 2 and beyond that there is Spiderman 2 and Blade 3. With 10% of all these properties Stan may need a powered suit or super strength just to lift his wallet.
