BBC's The Big Read

Thu 17th Apr 2003

BBC's The Big ReadPádraig Ó Méaloid writes: "The BBC are running a poll, similar to their 100 Greatest Britons, but this time to find the nation's 100 favourite books. This is a bit different from a number of polls run a few years back, where they were trying to find what people thought was the *best* book, which is probably an entirely different thing.

"Anyway, you can vote for your favourite over on ".

Pádraig also quotes a mail Ian McDonald sent to Queen's University Belfast SF Society, and then distributed through the Monico SF Group newsletter:

"As you know, BBC is running the UK's best book thing at the moment (trust you've all voted for the Lord of the Rings). What you may not know is BBC NI are also doing it for local writers... time, my good Mecon friends, to swing the ballot in favour of Support Your Local SF Writer... We can do it... and there's a night of free drink for everyone at the Senior Common Room if you get your friendly local Ian McDonald SF writer onto the top ten!! (Especially if I can push Colin Bateman out because..." (the remainder was missing when LostCarPark received it).

Pádraig goes on to point out other noteworthy Northern Irish SF writers include the late great James White, CS Lewis, and our own Peter Morwood. LostCarPark points out that he missed Bob Shaw (also late and great).

You can find the BBC NI voting here:

Nominations close on midnight on Saturday 19th April.
