Octocon is Moving! Again!

Mon 5th Apr 2004

Octocon is Moving! Again!Octocon chairman Michael Carroll tells us that the convention has recently had to find a new venue: "The management of our original venue recently informed us that they were no longer in a position to host Octocon, due to a double-booking error on their part."

The convention's new venue is the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth, County Kildare.

"It's a great place," Michael says, "but we almost overlooked it because it's not in Dublin. Then a little voice said to me, 'Hold on, who says that Octocon has to be held in Dublin? It's Ireland's NATIONAL Science Fiction convention, after all!' Sometimes that little voice speaks great wisdom. Though sometimes it doesn't, like the time it told me to phone the fire brigade to rescue a bird that appeared to be stuck in a tree. It turns out that birds can fly.

"We do apologise to any members who were expecting Octocon to be based in the heart of Dublin, but I promise that Maynooth is just as good. Better, in fact. There's free parking at the hotel, for a start; two days' parking in Dublin would cost a minimum of fifty quid! And for anyone who doesn't live right in the city centre, Maynooth is actually easier to get to than most places in Dublin. Plus of course the Glenroyal has truly excellent convention facilities.

"Again, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this move might cause, but it was absolutely unavoidable! If anyone has already booked our previous venue and experiences any difficulty in cancelling the booking, they should let us know and we will do our best to negotiate on their behalf."

There's more information about the hotel - plus details of alternative accommodation - on the Octocon website. Further information (about the hotel, the town of Maynooth and how to get there) will be added to the site over the next few weeks.
