Mieville wins Clarke

Wed 6th Jun 2001

Mieville wins ClarkeChina Mieville, Socialist Party Candidate in this month's British General Election, has won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for best novel of 2000 for Perdido Street Station. The Award was announced and presented at a ceremony in the Science Museum in London on Saturday May 19th. Mieville wins a specially engraved bookplate and a cheque for 2001.

Sir Arthur spoke at the ceremony via satellite link from his home in Sri Lanka and announced that for next year the prize money would be increased to 2002.

The award was the culmination of a day of events at the Science Museum organised by two-time winner of the Award Pat Cadigan. The events included readings from all of the shortlisted authors and panel sessions with such luminaries as Jonathon Carroll and Colin Greenland. The day was considered a success by all and may be repeated next year.

Mieville was in the news earlier in May but for a different reason. While attending a protest at a London local authority meeting he was arrested. He was, however, released shortly afterward without charge.
