Rowling takes Novel HugoMillennium Philcon, the 2001 World Science Fiction Convention took place over the weekend of August 31 to September 3. Given that it is one of the largest general SF conventions in the world, it attracts more than its fair share of awards ceremonies. The most notable, of course, are the Hugo Awards, or to give them their proper title, The Science Fiction Achievement Awards.

Harry Potter author J. K.. Rowling carried off the award for best novel of 2000 for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire while Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won a convincing victory in the Best Dramatic Presentation category.

The full results were as follows:

2001 Hugos

Best Novel: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

Best Novella: "The Ultimate Earth" by Jack Williamson

Best Novelette: "Millennium Babies" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

Best Short Story: "Different Kinds of Darkness" by David Langford

Best Related Book: Greetings from Earth: The Art of Bob Eggleton by Bob Eggleton and Nigel Suckling

Best Dramatic Presentation: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Best Professional Editor: Gardner Dozois

Best Professional Artist: Bob Eggleton

Best Semiprozine: Locus edited by Charles N. Brown

Best Fanzine: File 770 edited by Mike Glyer

Best Fan Writer: Dave Langford

Best Fan Artist: Teddy Harvia

John W. Campbell Award: Kristine Smith (2nd year of eligibility)

Other Awards presented at WorldCon included the the first Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award. This was established by the Cordwainer Smith Foundation in order to honour "a science fiction or fantasy writer whose work displays unusual originality, embodies the spirit of Cordwainer Smith's fiction, and deserves renewed attention or 'Rediscovery.'" Bob Silverberg presented the award to Olaf Stapledon.
