White and Willis pipped for retro Fan Hugos

White and Willis pipped for retro Fan HugosThis year, the Millennium Philcon organisers held a Retro Hugo competition. As we reported previously, the Hugos were first awarded in 1952. In order to honour achievement in SF before then, Conventions have in the past organised Retro Hugo ballots where work published 50 years previously is eligible. Ireland had two contenders in the Retro Hugos: James White, for Best Fan Artist and Best Fan Writer, and Walt Willis, also for Best Fan Writer. Slant, on which both White and Willis worked, was nominated in the Best Fanzine Category.

Sadly, neither of them won, although Slant placed second in its category. White took third place in both the writer and artist categories with Willis in fourth place for Best Fan Writer.
