Ireland has Worst Broadband Access in EuropeLostCarPark takes a brief break from sci-fi stories to talk about something of interest to many Irish Science Fiction fans: Internet access.

According to a report published by the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA), Ireland has the lowest rate of broadband access in Europe. We rank behind every other EU State except Greece for DSL access. However Greece makes up the lost ground with Cable internet access, leaving Ireland bottom of the table. A total of 977 DSL lines had been installed up to the end of June, with an additional 1500 cable Internet subscribers. Less than 0.2% of Irish subscribers use DSL or cable. By comparison, Germany has 2.5 million DSL users or 5%, and Belgium has a combination of DSL and Cable giving it over 15% penetration of broadband services.

The ECTA report also finds that across Europe established telecom operators are failing to make their networks available to new entrants by unbundling local loops. In this regard, Ireland also scores badly, with Eircom yet to unbundle a single subscriber line, despite having been instructed to make this service available over a year ago.

The lack of either flat-rate dial-up access or affordable broadband Internet access has been highlighted by Ireland Off-Line, for some time. LostCarPark would like to add its voice to their campaign.

Although several initiatives have been announced, all of them seem to be several years away, making it easy to avoid making difficult decisions now. But if we don't invest in our infrastructure now, we will continue to be left behind while our European cousins streak ahead into the digital millennium.
