Today we are looking at Member Platform, a community initiative to develop a general Drupal-based solution for membership organisations.

If you Give a Member Platform a Cookie - Lessons Learned Creating a Drupal Product for Member Orgs

JD Leonard smaling in front of a yellow backgroundThe initiative’s instigator and lead, JD Leonard, gave a talk at DrupalCon Atlanta back in April.

JD talked about some of the challenges facing organisations dealing with members, highlighting his efforts to modernise his local neighbourhood organisation.

He discussed the kinds of organisation that would benefit from Member Platform, including clubs and sports teams, professional associations, civic groups, meetup groups, nonprofits and businesses.

JD also laid out the “minimum viable approach” requirements for Member Platform, which he described as “Meetup.com light for a single group.” It will handle joining members and managing membership, publishing events and managing a list of events, registering for events and announcing events to members, and the ability to localise to non-English languages. He also discussed some features that are out of scope for the 1.0 release, includng membership dues, paid events, donation processing, fundraising management, Mailchimp integration, and syncing events with Drupal.org (for Drupal events).

The project was at quite an early stage when the talk took place, and quite a lot has taken place since. However, it gives a great introduction into the project and is well worth watching. If you would like to learn the latest developments, you should come to the Slack or Zoom meetings, held on alternating weeks (see the project page for details).

Slides from the talk are also available.
